Is Garmin trying to make our phones redundant? Or is “obsolete” the more accurate term?
It might seem so, following the company’s introduction of its D2 Mach 2 Pro smartwatch, which adds inReach two-way satellite and cellular communications to its already impressive list of aviation and other smartwatch functions. Garmin unveiled the watch at the Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo, held April 14-19 in Lakeland, Florida.
Maintaining Contact
Most pilots are aware of the limitations of the cellular network when traveling by air—an issue that comes into play on many flights, especially when visiting remote areas, backcountry airports, or off-airport destinations. The D2 Mach 2 Pro seeks to correct the problem with its satellite capability, which gives pilots access to text messaging, voice calling, SOS capabilities, and more with no need for a cell phone.
Beyond cellular and satellite features, the watch is equipped with a sunlight-readable 1.4-inch active-matrix organic LED touchscreen display and includes aviation tools ranging from maps and weather reports to pilot health monitoring.
“From the hangar to the great outdoors, D2 Mach 2 Pro helps aviators stay connected, even without their smartphone,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president of aviation sales, marketing programs, and support. “Satellite and LTE connectivity allows aviators to keep in touch with family or get help if needed, adding extra peace of mind right on their wrist. Every pilot on the planet should have this new smartwatch.”
Feature-Packed
The watch case measures 51mm and includes a carbon-gray titanium bezel, built-in microphone, and speaker, and is available with a chestnut leather or silicone wristband. Garmin said the D2 Mach 2 Pro can operate in smartwatch mode for up to 24 days on a single battery charge.
The calling function is ideally suited to general aviation, where phones are often out of reach, or at least unable to reach a signal. The D2 Mach 2 Pro’s inReach satellite and cellular connectivity and LTE technology provide phone-free access to voice calls and messaging, LiveTrack location sharing, and more.
The satellite connection allows users to check weather reports and send messages and location check-ins. In an emergency, the wearer can activate the SOS system to reach emergency response personnel at the Garmin Response coordination center.
The D2 Mach 2 Pro is available on Garmin.com at a suggested retail price of $1,549.99.
